It’s best to go to a venue or an establishment that has the proper license or you can simply have a backyard party and hire a professional who will serve you and your guests. You will be arrested for serving without a license. The fine you’ll get is heavy if caught serving alcohol and even worse your guests could be arrested for intoxication in a public place. Here in Florida it’s somewhat more difficult to obtain a license to serve in a public place. No alcohol was served because the bride and groom didn’t have a city policeman onsite for the duration of the reception. This happen at a wedding in Indiana that Janna and I attended. A police presence is often required and if no officers are available to accept the off duty assignment, you’re out of luck. Now there have been occasions where alcohol is allowed to be served at a public building or park, but only by permit from the city where its located. Also, privately owned property requires the permission of the owner. No alcohol can be consumed at a public place such as a city park, public space like the beach or any place that has a sign out front prohibiting the consumption of alcohol on the premise. You have to ask or risk a huge disappointment when you find out the champagne toast has to be switched out for sparkling cider or grape juice. Don’t assume your venue or location allows the consumption of alcohol. Your hired bartender can not charge guests for drinks at a location not authorized for the sale of alcohol. Other places may allow you to hire your own bartender as long as the booze is an open bar for guests. You have to ask them what their rules are and you may have to purchase their liquor and have it served by their bartender. The venue you pick must have a license to serve. Pick a Venue with a License to serve alcohol An establishment can apply for a one day license open to the public but it costs a lot and you have to jump through a number of hoops in order to obtain one. A license to sell is harder to get and you have to pay taxes on the sale of each drop you sell. It’s much easier and cost effective to obtain a license to serve. Think of it for a second, you can sell liquor to your guests or provide an open bar. The laws for serving alcohol and the sale of alcohol are two completely different subjects. There are liquor licenses that allow sale but not consumption of alcohol like a gas stations or a liquor store, and then there locations and establishments that are licensed to sell and serve alcohol. If you are planning to serve alcohol at your party, you should hire a professional bartender and the location where you serve alcohol needs a liquor license. Serving alcohol is a subject that is complicated and I am far from being an expert in liquor laws, but I wish to cover this subject at least once. Before you assume you’re all having a drink, consider your local and state laws before you drag in the coolers and hire the bartender. Each state has it’s own laws and each city or town is subject to the county laws. The laws are strict and the penalties severe. Not all places allow alcohol due to the simple fact that the sale and consumption of alcohol is regulated by the State. Yes alcohol is a drug and your party location is the dispensary. It has been said that the Bartender is someone who is basically a pharmacist with a limited supply. ![]()
